Greetings Earthlings!

Yesterday was the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. I have to say, though, I look forward to this day every time it rolls around.

It’s not because it’s the first day of winter or because it’s my brother’s birthday (happy birthday, Rob!), but because it means the sun is on its way back. I know, I know. There are weeks and months of dreary weather ahead. Still, the symbolic crossing-off of December 21 is like turning a corner in a dark tunnel and feeling a fresh breeze. I can’t see the end, but I know it’s there. It can only get better from here, right?

In case that’s not enough for you, here’s a little pick-me-up to get you through the week: the micro grid is unmoderated! That’s right: stick to the basic rules and you’ll be eligible for voting. That ought to cheer us all up, right? So get out there and give us your best 42.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Answer the ultimate question in exactly 42 words: what did you get me?

A good answer to this week’s question will include a gift (physical or otherwise) exchanged between the narrator and one or more other characters. A dozen roses, a pair of socks, your heart or your life – it doesn’t matter if it came in a velvet box or a paper bag. A gift is a gift; tell us what you got.

Don’t get disqualified on a technicality

READ THE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES. Take us seriously so we can take you seriously.

COUNT YOUR WORDS. Use your eyes, not your word processor. Your post may not be eligible for voting if you go over or under 42 words. And remember, any words surrounding your microstory — explanations, references, footnotes, shout-outs, etc. — will be counted against your 42-word limit. (The only exception is photo credits.)

PROOFREAD. Nothing is easier, and nothing will get you bumped from the voting grid faster than typos, spelling or punctuation mistakes, or grammatical errors. You’ve only got 42 words; mistakes stick out.

ANSWER THE QUESTION. We try to give you some basic guidelines with every question; pay attention to what we’re looking for. Keep in mind that your post has to make sense if your reader doesn’t know the question. Don’t use the question as your title or anywhere else in your piece.
