About 15 years ago, my big brother won a month’s free rent at his garden apartment by winning the residents’ appreciation day hula hoop contest. Fifteen years later, I’m still letting that sink in. You know for a month’s free rent, whether rent was $650 or $6500, there had to be some stiff competition. My brother, at the time a 30-something divorced father and regional corporate bigwig, won a hula hoop contest. Our latent gifts and talents seem to emerge whenever there are cash incentives. It’s the American way.

Alison at Mama Wants This was the happy accidental winner of last week’s lovelinks virgin prize. She didn’t introduce her readers to lovelinks because of the surprise gift I’d offered—like so many of you, she was spreading the word because she loves her some lovelinks. That makes me feel yummy inside, but a promise is a promise. I’d offered a surprise, so I gave Alison one. I won’t tell you what I gave her unless she does. It’s a super cool super secret. Until it isn’t.

Speaking of super cool button badges—hey, were we not—we now have super cool button badges for each weekly lovelinks. Once you install it somewhere in your lovelinks post, you’ll be ready to link up, plus you’ll be very stylish. The super cool button badge is a lovely substitute for the required backlink. [EDIT] Thanks, Amanda, for troubleshooting the code. My super cool button badge is back in business]

Plus, there is also a badge for the winners! Last week’s winners have them installed on their blogs, you can get one for yours. Write a great post, link it up, show others some love, win lovelinks. It’s very simple.

IMPORTANT: I’m trying some adjustments this week. I’m closing lovelinks to submissions on the second link day at 9 pm U.S. eastern [-4 GMT] because I’ve noticed the poor blogs that get linked past that time rarely get any visitors, and they tend to get the least amount of votes. Compressing the linkup window should help get quality visits for everyone. You will still have the same 24 hours to vote. Voting will now begin at 9 pm U.S. eastern on Wednesdays and end 9 pm U.S. eastern on Thursdays. Winners will still be announced on Friday at midnight U.S. eastern time. This change should work out well for everyone, and it won’t drop your Klout score, double your Netflix subscription fee or exploit your privacy settings for nefarious gain.

Lovelinks #29 is open.
