Welcome to Who’s on Fourth where we interview one member of the YeahWrite community and the interview will publish the fourth Monday of each month. Next in the series features Arden Ruth interviewing Melony Boseley of The Write Melony.

YeahWrite on YeahWrite: Arden interviews Melony

It’s been almost a year and half since Melony Boseley first joined our little corner of the Internet, and she’s been a fixture ever since.

I can’t believe it’s only been 18 months since I joined. A newbie by many standards. I met Donna-Louise Bishop during a beta reading event in the NYCM FFC2015 and started following her blog. She was often posting to the YeahWrite grids, which was my introduction to the community. Honestly, the community is what brings me back every time, though. I have gotten to know people from across the world here, and even though our lives are all so different, we’re all the same too because, as writers, we’re all insecure about ourselves, which makes everyone so encouraging and helpful. Also, if I could bottle up the YeahWrite editors creative juices and become half as talented as they are, I totally would!

You can find Melony at any of our grids on any given week. Though microprose began as her favorite grid, she’s started leaning toward something a little different over the past months.

Once I started posting on the other grids, I began to have a tough time deciding if I loved fiction or nonfiction more. I’d lean towards nonfiction now. It takes a certain kind of bravery to write nonfiction – to put yourself out there for everyone to see and potentially criticize or mock. You never get that in this community, but the internet is not always nonfiction’s best friend. It’s nice to have a place where you’re not judged for the choices you make or the life you’ve had.

As always, I love to know what advice our community members would give those hanging out on the edge, waiting for the perfect opportunity to dive in to one of our grids.

It took me a solid month of lurking to make my first post on YeahWrite. I was initially confused by the rules, so I lurked to see what everyone else was doing. It didn’t take long for me to see how supportive the community is. Once you’ve submitted that first post, you will be hooked, though, so just take that first step. Trust me when I say, it’s worth every single minute of it. From the feedback you get from other writers to the weekly roundups to the monthly and weekly posts (nonfiction know-how, poetry slams, etc.), every bit of information that YeahWrite gives will help you become a better writer. If you’re still uncertain, join the Facebook page, the YeahWrite Coffeehouse, to see how encouraging the community is.

Melony started writing at a young age, but like many of us, the creative bug has come and gone over the years.

I was ten when I first started writing. It was a Halloween story I had to write for class, and when I finished it, I had this amazing rush of emotion roll over me. I wrote nearly every day for years. When I reached my adult years, though, I suddenly stopped. I would occasionally write when “inspiration hit,” but for the most part, I was inactive. I started writing my first book when I was 18, and it took me nearly 8 years to finish it. It’s undergone many edits since then and looks nothing like my original drafts. It was three years ago, though, when I started back up in earnest. I joined NYC Midnight’s Flash Fiction Challenge and made it to Round 3, which gave me the confidence to put myself out there. After that, I joined the Short Story Challenge in 2015 and created my current blog.

Luckily, she stumbled upon our community as well and hasn’t looked back. When Melony isn’t writing, you can usually find her diving into pop culture, usually in the form of movies, television, and video games.

I have too many conflicting interests, which actually hinders my writing a lot. I read, of course, because a writer who doesn’t have time to read isn’t a writer. I watch copious amounts of movies & television – Netflix is constantly on in the background. I play video games – mostly World of Warcraft, but I do have all three of the new consoles (XB One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch). I also workout and crochet.

When she is writing though (and that’s most of the time), she has many projects up her sleeve.

I am working on a few books. My blog is around to try and grow my reader base, which is probably a little silly since the majority of my writing seems to be nonfiction and my book is a YA new fantasy & horror. I am working on a series called The Young Mystics. I have one book written, the second book partially written, and two more being outlined. I also have been world-building a high fantasy book which will be a big focus once I finish book 2 of The Young Mystics, and a teen female drama book, as well. For short-term goals, though, my focus this year has been on getting a paid publication within a journal or magazine of some kind.

Good luck, Melony! Thank you for letting us get to know you a little better here at YeahWrite. We are so happy to have you in our community! Make sure you follow Melony’s blog, The Write Melony. You can also follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

Oh, you want more? Well here are five things you never knew about Melony:

  1. She decided at the age of six that she would marry Mark Hamill. They would have two kids, and they would totally not be named Luke & Leia.
  2. She won awards for her singing in high school, but you wouldn’t know it if she sang around her cats. They try to drown her out with their cries, and one puts his paw over her mouth.
  3. She was a super over-achiever in high school and joined clubs so it would look good on her college resume. However, she never finished college.
  4. While in junior college, she made money writing other people’s research papers. She never got caught. Errr until now.
  5. She’s completely mature all of the time. She sticks her tongue out at people at work for no reason whatsoever.

Are you ready for the YeahWrite #319 Weekly Writing Challenges opening this week? We hope so! Your badges await in the sidebar. Grab the code, paste into the text or HTML view of your post, then submit your post to the grids for a little friendly competition. We’re glad you’re here.
