For Karen’s blog, her biggest goal is to make writing a part of her daily routine. No excuses. Whether it’s throwing down some words in a tiny notebook, tapping away at the keys on her laptop, or over-sharing on Facebook, she always makes sure it is a part of her day. In her own words, “I just want to see where the words take me, and enjoy the journey.”
Recently, Karen dove into the glorious land of fiction. At first, the idea of it was pretty daunting, as she had never really done it before. Karen felt the same way about poetry. However, in the past year, she wrote a few poems and a dozen short stories.
When Karen isn’t writing, you can find her doing one thing. Yep, you guessed it.
Boxing.
Karen started boxing around the same time she started her blog. Wanting to try something new, she thought of her daughter, Gaelin, and the boxing lessons that she had taken when she was a teenager. Her coach, cleverly nick-named ‘Coach,’ was inspiring and motivating. He was also a ‘take-no-shit kind of hardass’ which Karen thought would be good for her.
Karen is also a complete addict when it comes to estate/garage-saleing and thrifting. Karen and her wife Mo have a small business buying and selling vintage things. Speaking of Mo, when asked to sell her in 140 characters or less, Karen was quick to lay on the love:
Agreed, Karen. Make sure you check out Karen’s blog Fat Girl in Boxing Gloves to read about all of her adventures.
Five things you don’t know about Karen:
- Her favorite color is green.
- She thinks raisins are disgusting.
- When she was 20, she dated a 35 year-old Elvis impersonator for a few months.
- She didn’t get her driver’s license until she was 27.
- She is a tiny bit psychic.

The biggest surprise to me, Karen, is the limited amount of time you’ve been writing publicly. I find each and every one of your posts to be polished, inspired, thought provoking and always, ALWAYS well written.
Great interview Arden! And Karen, you ROCK! I love you. I’m a huge fan! (But I disagree about raisins. I love them too.)
Thanks you guys, and special thanks to Arden. She asks great questions, and she did a fabulous job of making the life of a middle-aged boxing garage-saler look interesting. Arden = magic!
Yeah Write is such a special community of writers – I check out all of the grids every week (even when I don’t submit), because I’m always inspired by the writing that I find here.
This is so awesome! XOXOXO
Karen is awesome. I already knew it, but after reading your fantastic interview, Arden, I’m even more convinced. I also think that some of the facts we didn’t know about her deserve to be expanded upon in a few blog posts 🙂
C.C., Hahahaha – we’ll see! A girl has to have some secrets ; )
I always love the chance to read anything Karen has written, and I loved seeing the photos too! I gotta disagree on the raisins, though.

I love learning more about the fabulous Yeah Write folks. I must agree that raisins are repulsive.
I adore Karen, and am so glad I met her through yeah write. I am with her on the raisins.
Arden, wonderful interview! You’ve got a gift, girl!
No surprise to see Karen here. She is an excellent writer. Be it fiction or truth, the real her always peeps out of her posts and touches the reader. Those are some lovely bits of advice, Karen. Thank you, Yeah Write, for having her over.
