Shark week

Right now I’m watching a Shark Week program, taking a break from the sun while everyone else is in the pool. For some reason, even though every Shark Week special is the same (or at least bears remarkable similarity), it’s fascinating to me. No, I don’t have a shark-phobia, but I think what’s fascinating to me is threefold: 1) they’re very misunderstood animals, 2) ocean dwellers are mysterious in that they live in such an unknown frontier, and 3) their eyes are inscrutable.

This gets me wondering if when you’re writing, you stick to the familiar, or do you delve into the unknown? I’m often drawn to similar themes over and over, but each time I explore them, I discover something new, either about myself or the subject matter. Perhaps this is a metaphor for Shark Week?

Before you launch your exploration, be sure to read the submission guidelines before you press Post. If you’ve found some other yeah write writers you dig, why not ask them to be your writing partner? Everyone needs another set of eyes to point out the typos, content errors, and ungainly phraseologies in our posts.

yeah write’s super challenge

If you’re looking for a nonfiction essay challenge to really up your game, check out our super challenge (don’t worry: fiction is coming up soon!). It’s a three-round competition, and the first round starts July 8-10. When it kicks off, you’ll get prompts to incorporate into your nonfiction essay. Each round advances the best writing. And we’ve got prompts and prizes. Be sure to sign up now! Read more about it here.

Prompt up!

Prompt up is our optional weekly writing prompt for the fiction|poetry challenge! Here’s how it works: we choose a sentence prompt from last week’s winning nonfiction post and announce it in the kickoff. It’s your job to use that prompt in your poem or story and then run with it. The prompt is just a springboard, though: feel free to use it as your first sentence, move it, change it, or float down it to other territories.

In Back Of the Line, Lisa shared a story about racism in the classroom. The prompt up based on her post is: The girls froze. He kept rolling.

Wait! Where’s the poetry slam?

For the next two months, we’re taking some time off from our nonfiction know-how and poetry slams to focus on the super challenge. However, you can always check out our archives if you’re needing a little more inspiration this week. Happy writing![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
