More than we can chew

At the beginning of every class, I have my composition students journal. Though I pick out topics for them to gnaw on if they so choose, I also give them the option to just empty their brains before diving into the meatier topics we’ll cover later in class. See, it doesn’t matter what we write when we’re just practicing. Our brains just need space to play. That’s where our creativity comes from; the freedom to explore those glimmering little what ifs. But our brains also need practice.

This is where the ‘every day’ part comes in. I require students to sit down and write as part of their practice. Once they gain comfort with the essentials, then the larger topics they will face later on in their lives won’t be as intimidating. They will have been practicing for a long time already.

If you don’t already have one, develop a practice. Through it, you may discover what your brain is chewing on. Who knows: this may be the time to give that what if a shot.

Before submitting your latest and greatest to the grid, we’re back to a moderated grid at yeah write, so reviewing the submission guidelines is a good idea. A refresher course–or a peek at our guidelines if you’re new–will help you to click that submit button with confidence.

Meet our members

Yeah write is a 100% volunteer run organization, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of some amazing members. Why don’t you swing by and see who they are? While you’re there, give them a big thank you, or maybe a hug. And if you’re so inclined, consider becoming a member yourself.

What did it taste like?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. Bitter or salty? Or sweet and sour? Or more metaphorical, perhaps? Already have a different story thought up? No problem! Use the prompt only if you need it.

More inspiration

Need a bit more? For this month’s focus on fiction, we are embarking on the hero’s journey with the monomyth. In the poetry corner we’ll be exploring the Japanese art of tanka.

Still drawing a blank? You can also find writing exercises in the coffeehouse to get things started. You’ll notice we moved it to a Facebook group: much easier access and interact!

Is this your first time here?
