Though the words may be wrong

Scat singing is so cool. Glamorous people, such as Ella Fitzgerald and Scatman Crothers, practiced so much that they could sing made-up words to a melody and still manage to keep their audience’s admiration. It’s a little more difficult for us common folk. I tried to sing “S’Wonderful” in a karaoke bar once. I started out strong, but about halfway through I got self-conscious and just started mumbling “spaghetti” over and over again. When I got back to my table, a steaming plate of pasta and meatballs awaited me. My friends thought they were funny.

We’ve relaxed the moderation requirements for the summer, but that doesn’t mean you should submit the fiction or poetry equivalent of mumbling “spaghetti” repeatedly. Don’t improvise; give us your best stuff! If you’re not sure your work is the best it could be, consider keeping it for another week, ask a friend for feedback, and then revise like the admirable writers you are. You can also ask for help in the coffeehouse.

Here’s this week’s prompt:

How high the moon?

This optional prompt can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Not sure what the prompt means? Listen to the Ella Fitzgerald song. Already have a different story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only here if you need it.

Need a push?

For those looking for a challenge, we’ve got many options to choose from. Here’s a list of all of the poetry slams and focus on fiction features so far. Feel free to revisit a fiction genre or poetry form you enjoyed, or catch up on something you missed the first time around.

Is this your first time here?
