Writing with a bag over your head
A few nights ago I couldn’t sleep, so I grabbed my journal and a glass of wine and came out to the couch. At 4 in the morning I was still sitting on my couch writing furiously. I was so completely convinced that I had written my Fahrenheit 451 or my I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I went to bed elated, knowing in the morning I would change the world with my post about the wonders of macaroni and cheese.
What can I say? I was sleep deprived, hungry, and maybe a little tipsy.
Sometimes, as writers, we get so caught up in what our writing could be, we don’t see it for what it actually is. I caught how misguided I was this time when I woke up and reread, but more often my writing partner is the one to gently remove my bejeweled Best Thing Ever Written crown. (Thanks, writing partner!)
To find a writing partner, ask your favorite writer or leave a post in the coffeehouse. To find this week’s optional prompt, read on!
Why are you still awake?
This optional prompt is to serve as your inspiration for your fiction or poetry. For instance, I may wish to post that ode to mac and cheese as an answer. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.

I work with a writing partner all the time – Rowan G and I have been working on several collaborative writing projects for the last year or so. The way we work is as much (or more) about exploring the characters and the story as it is about fine-tuning our writing. Sometimes a little outside perspective – or external motivation – is exactly what you need to move a story forward.
If folks are interested, I posted a bit about our process over at the coffeehouse (https://yeahwrite.me/coffeehouse).
