Challenge v. Speakeasy

The grids open Tuesday, and we can hardly wait to read what you’ve cooked up as your very best personal essays and traditional blog anecdotes this week. Submit your fiction and poetry over at the speakeasy, where your first line is written for you. Even if you don’t submit, pop over to there for a fantastic collection of creative writing.

Open submissions

We’re loving the open submissions which have permanently returned to yeah write. There is no longer a moderation queue, but all submission guidelines and FAQ still apply. This is especially true of self-promotional posts. Or even self-promotional pleas at the beginning/end/hidden in the middle of your posts. We love you, we really do! But please remove any “Vote for me in the BENDIEST ELBOW contest!” lines in your post. We know you have the bendiest elbow found anywhere on the Interwebs, but using yeah write to promote it hurts our feelings.

As you start your winning submission

Subject matter is a tough choice for a lot of bloggers who write and writers who blog. Some weeks it seems like we get a lot of poop, other weeks it’s death. On occasion, we see several illness posts, other weeks it’s all about overcoming depression. Or not. Choose something you know. Choose a moment that has stayed with you. It can be from this morning, or it can be from eleven years ago. Just let it be true, and let it reflect you. Write what comes as long as it has a tightly written introduction, a clearly defined story line, and shows off a clear so what? by the end. Writing well about everyday life is the challenge of the challenge grid.

Get going with your writing! Keep on reading great writers, cutting out the fluff, snipping off the loose threads, and make sure to triple-check for grammar and spelling (it makes a difference, especially if you want to move over to the invitational grid!).  If it’s not happening for you, maybe it’s just not your week.  Bring us your best stuff when you know it’s gonna be the best on the grid.

Weekend moonshine grid

For those of you who don’t fancy yourself storytellers, but who still love the community spirit found here at yeah write more than any other place you’ve been, we are opening up yeah write on the weekends just for you. Starting at 6 p.m. eastern time on Fridays and closing by 12:01 a.m. on Mondays, the moonshine grid will be here for you to hang out, find some new-to-you-blogs and write without the anxiety of being judged, evaluated and voted on by the yeah write editors. Unlimited space, unlimited joy. Still no promotional or commercial posts.
