Broken Magic
We’re joining the speakeasy for the next four weeks as it celebrates the release of Friend of Yeah Write Eric Sipple’s young adult novel Broken Magic. Beginning Tuesday, the optional photo prompt for the yeah write #78 challenge grid will be the same one at the speakeasy and your optional theme will be tales of the strange, supernatural or unexplained. The speakeasy will be giving away four copies of Broken Magic, so if you’re feeling a piece of strange, supernatural or unexplained fiction coming on, take it on over.
Personal essay and creative nonfiction
Besides blog anecdotes, the yeah write challenge grid is for creative nonfiction or personal essays. From the blog Find Your Creative Muse, here’s a good article clearly defining the personal essay and one explaining the creative nonfiction genre. The personal essay centers around self, creative nonfiction, though it may contain personal anecdotes, has a more global focus and subject matter usually requiring research.
To give these two essays the proper yeah write spin, contributing editor Cindy tends to write personal essays on her blog The Reedster Speaks while contributing editor Kristin leans toward creative nonfiction in her space That Unique Weblog. Guest editor Deb of MannaHatta Mamma blends the two as she writes of social issues from a mother’s perspective.
Kicking off the $100 Amazon gift card challenge
Originally, we were going to wait until the challenge grid hit 50 entries before kicking off the $100 Amazon gift card challenge, but who knows when that will happen again and this generous sponsor donation was burning a hole in our pockets, so here we are.
Once voting ends, if your published entry lands on the top row, you’ll earn 5 points
On the second row after votes are calculated? That’s four points for you.
Third row gets three points.
Fourth gets two.
Fifth gets one.
No points for landing under row five, but since we’re awarding 10 points to each editor’s pick, there’s still a chance to earn.
We’ll have a public spreadsheet so everyone can keep track of the cumulative points and we’ll calculate them each week, so if mathin’ is not your strong suit, simply keep checking this space.

Mathin’ is not my strong suit. Neither are swim suits. 🙂 Glad you’re keeping track!
