Many many thanks to Eric at Saalon Muyo for kicking off the yeah write summer writer’s series this week!
Since it’s a major American holiday, I am taking over to give him and all the other guest editors time off to wait in line for an hour at Starbucks. Take that, Great Britain.
If you’re wondering how to get your post down to the 500 words or fewer required to get on the grid for the next several weeks, I’m here to help. Start by cutting these phrases:
[no_alert] I was gonna write my post about X then I thought about Y and Z came to mind before I had to let the dogs out, then I got back to the computer and had to start over, so this is what I’m writing about [/no_alert]
[no_alert] But I digress [/no_alert]
[no_alert] The color of anything or anybody. It’s not as relevant as you may think [/no_alert]
[no_alert] Why you are writing the post [/no_alert]
[note_alert] Where you are writing the post [/note_alert]
[no_alert] And then [/no_alert]
[no_alert] Descriptions of common items. We all know what a washing machine looks like [/no_alert]
[no_alert] Asides. You don’t have room for asides in a 500 word post. Every word counts double [/no_alert]
[no_alert] What your heart was doing in the midst of the event—pounding, fluttering, stopping—unless you’re writing about your first heart attack [/no_alert]
[no_alert] What your breath was doing [/no_alert]
[no_alert] Parenthetical phrases. They is da debil [/no_alert]
There are still a few spaces left before the yeah write #64 summer writer’s series grid closes on Thursday at noon US EDT [-4 GMT]. The panel of judges are reading each and every post as they wait for their triple caf soy lattes, so please keep writing.

edit your details
[check_list]
- Read the summer FAQ page for other details
- Let the prompt lead you, but do not include the prompt in any way in your post, not even at the end as a footnote
- If the prompt takes you from thunderstorms to watching TV at your grandma’s house to how much you love Pat Sajak to the oldest person you’ve ever kissed, we want that story the furthest away in your imagination from the original prompt. Let your imagination loose
- Keep your writing style! Do you tell stories with humor? Prose? Verse? Photos? Illustrations? Keep doing that. We’ll read Shakespearean drama on our own time
- Cut away at everything unnecessary to your story
- Remember: publish no more than 500 words
- Not ready to add your entry today? Still perfecting and reading other posts? No problem: you’ve got until Thursday at noon EDT [-4GMT]
- Don’t forget to badge your post
- Have fun!

Yeah write #64 summer grid continues…
I am guilty of the parenthetical phrases (but usually they totally add to the sentence). Oh no, I did it again.
Excellent tips.
In the spirit of fairness, I did not even see that both you AND Eric had posted new articles re: Summer Series #64. Although Eric has been tweeting the crap out of it, so that was my first clue.
But I digress, your post was awesome and totally helpful. Except I already submitted my entry so better luck next time.
What fantastic instructions and awesome writing tips!
Comment karma – 1000.
This comment has nothing to do with your tweet and everything to do with your inherent awesomeness.
