[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Hey there, campers!

Whatever, you guys. It’s summer in half the world, and that means camping and sunlight and roasting marshmallows. For me, I’m just as happy to put my marshmallows in the fireplace and cuddle up with a blanket, but some of you like summer so let’s pretend for a minute, because I have MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS for you!

rowmies

For all y’all doing NoMo, you’ll notice that your rowmies are changing. So make double-sure to make the rounds and comment – you’ll meet new people and read new things – and isn’t that what it’s all about?

moderation – or not

If you’re new in these parts, or if you’re old enough to need a little help with your memory now and then, US holiday weeks mean unmoderated grids. What’s unmoderated, precisely? Well, it means that as long as your post meets our word count and genre requirements, has a badge, and is non-commercial you’ll be in the vote. No love letters, no panicky butterflies in your stomach waiting to see if Cerberus lets you past the River Styx, just sweet sweet submissions.

If you’re not in the US, next week is our Thanksgiving (Canada likes to get that out of the way early so they don’t have to see their families two months in a row) and I’ll be cooking pralined sweet potatoes instead of writing love letters. Then we have a few moderated weeks, and then I’m back on vacay for Christmas and New Year’s.

TL;DR If you’ve been nervous about submitting, now’s your chance!

results

Whether you’re new, old, on the grid or just dropping by, you want to know the results of this week’s popular vote, right? Me too. So, just like every Friday, I’m going to give you the results on all three of our grids – nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microfiction – right here!

But it’s not all about the popular vote, folks. We also have our editorial staff picks to hand out. Every week our editors comb through your submissions looking for their favorites. Picks are based on writing quality, how successful the author is in conveying information, and just plain style. If you got a staff pick this week, grab your badge from the sidebar and wear it with pride!

Once you’re done reading through the staff picks (and congratulating the winners in the comments), keep scrolling down to check out who won the popular vote on all three grids. If you earned the highest number of votes in any challenge, you are this week’s crowd favorite! If you came in first, second or third, you get “top three” honors. Grab your badge from our sidebar!

Looking for your badge? The fiction|poetry, nonfiction and microstories challenges all have the same winner, staff pick, and top three badges. It doesn’t clutter up our sidebar, and they’ll still look pretty on yours![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

struggling, for the win by simtasia

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]In the first sentence, the author’s young daughter throws “herself on the kitchen floor like a dishrag.” Like a dishrag—that wet, domestic cloth that cleans everything up, is spent, limp. Such choices in words and syntax make this short essay about Samantha’s daughter and her run for student council much more than an account of everyday life. It is a celebration of a child’s emerging self-confidence and a mother’s incipient trust.  Sprinkled throughout are sweet glimpses, like her daughter’s penchant for colorful drama: “I’m a fairy stuck in a flower that won’t bloom!” In equal measure are hard little truths, like her daughter’s “nothing voice” that Samantha won’t name aloud because it isn’t nothing; it is “the voice she uses to get a running start.” Sigh. I know that voice.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”22653″ style=”vc_box_circle” title=”meg”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

That’s it for our staff picks this week! Remember, we don’t always give out a pick on every grid; if we were impressed by several posts on one grid, we’ll give them all picks, and if nothing really stood out for us on another grid, we’ll hold off.

If you’re lost in the middle of the grid and wondering how you can get a little more feedback on your posts, check out our membership perks!

Everybody: before you go, please take some time to leave your favorites a little love in the comments.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Weekend moonshine grid opens today at 6 p.m. eastern time

Grab your marshmallows, graham crackers and toasting forks. Natalie’s already stockpiling chocolate bars and she promised to save you one if you come on down to the moonshine grid this weekend. She’ll get the bonfire going at 6pm EST and keep it burning till Sunday night so drop by! Just don’t bring your commercial posts unless you want to throw them in the fire. They’re great kindling but terrible singers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Congratulations to the crowd favorites at yeah write #240

The thumbnails are now sorted in order of most votes to fewest. Ties in the overall number of votes are broken by number of editor votes.

Congratulations if you’re at or near the top! Writing well is hard work, and we’re honored you’ve chosen us this week to showcase your entry.

If you’re at or near the bottom, don’t be discouraged. You’re in the right community for learning and growing as a writer, and we are always available with resources for those who ask nicely.

To our readers and voters: thank you! See you next week.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
