Open a door

Last week, I wrote about paying attention, seeing the world afresh, and how that helps heighten your creativity. Today, I’m thinking about ways to inspire our writing more concretely but in keeping with this exercise in creativity.

Years ago, I led a workshop for teens at the Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio. One of the prompts I gave was especially effective. We wrote about doors. Our respective doors — the doors to our homes, past and present, or doors to the high school, doors to the places we love and those we fear. Each student opened up their worlds, describing heavy oak doors and doors with torn screens, doorbells that didn’t work, the relief felt in slipping the key through its hole, the sorrow in shutting a beloved door for the last time.

Maybe this week you could try picking a single object, looking at it up close, finding inspiration in the way it reflects your life and those you love. Before you get started, don’t forget to read Rowan’s nonfiction know-how for September — see below for details.

Nonfiction know-how:

brevity

For this month’s nonfiction know-how we’re going to focus on two conflicting aphorisms. The first is “winners never quit; quitters never win” and the second is “quit while you’re ahead.” We’re not talking about quitting writing entirely, of course, but we’re talking about knowing when to stop, and how much is enough. This month, Rowan offers up some advice on how to know when enough is enough.
