In praise of weeding

We have a garden bed that extends out beyond the raised backyard deck. My plan was to use this bed as a screen to hide the mulch-covered area under the deck. As luck would have it, the bird feeders also extend beyond the deck, above the garden bed. Whenever it rains, I can count on hundreds of seedlings popping up through the ground each morning—corn, millet, sunflower.

I enjoy weeding out the seedlings. There’s something gratifying about pulling these two-inch long weeds, seeing them disappear from the bed. Seeing if I can pull each just right, attached to the seed that gave it life.

Editing is a lot like weeding. I find myself yanking out words that are superfluous, that invade the better, adjacent words, that clutter up a story. For me, editing is frequently about thinning out the extraneous phrases that detract from the essay. As you write this week, be sure you spend some time in the weeds, pulling out the words and phrases that don’t help your story. You’ll be surprised by how your words have room to breathe.
