Convince me

If you’ve been following along with or participating in the yeah write super challenge, you know that the remaining 16 competitors had to submit a persuasive essay last night for round two. A persuasive essay does just what it says: persuades. Sometimes it is jam-packed with facts and figures; other times, it is punctuated with anecdotes.

Either way, a persuasive essay is particularly useful these days—from writing about political candidates, to immigration or gun control issues, or some other hot topic. The persuasive essay gives you an opportunity to put meaning behind your writing, as opposed to simply ranting.

In my real life, I’m a grants writer. But really, my writing at work is about persuasion. The hardest challenge I have to overcome is to make the reader care about the project. I have to be creative, to show and not tell, to avoid passive sentences. When writing about the need for a digital storytelling initiative, for example, I also wrote about the caves of Lascaux as one of the earliest representatives of visual storytelling–the bison and horses dancing on the red-orange walls.

If you’re not interested in memoir-like writing, try writing a persuasive essay and incorporate all of the elements we use in creative nonfiction every day: setting, character, plot, dialogue, syntax, word choice, showing not telling.
