Thanks for writing

Yes, thanks for writing. I mean that in more ways than one. Every day, I drive down the hill on Route 229 to a small river valley before heading east to the college town where I work. It’s a beautiful drive and I use it to remember gratitude. Each day, driving down “Gratitude Hill,” I thank whoever — God, the universe, the divine spark, whoever — for the people I love, for my job, my house, my good fortune, and for writing. Not just having time or ability to write reasonably well, but that I can write at all.

Fourteen percent of Americans can’t read above the third grade level. Imagine growing up in Afghanistan, where more than 70% of the country is illiterate. The percentage of women who cannot read or write is even higher.

It’s Thanksgiving Week here in the United States, so I’m using this opportunity to thank you all for writing. Thank you. Now go write something extraordinary. Put your gift to good use.

And share it here at yeah write! This holiday week is unmoderated. Every post will be eligible for voting! The standard rules for nonfiction apply: stay within the 1,000-word count, no commercial posts, and use proper grammar and punctuation.

Who’s on fourth?

Tune in on Monday for this month’s interview with Shailaja of The Moving Quill & Diary of a Doting Mom![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Nonfiction theme of the month: dialogue

What are we talking about? Rowan gives us the skinny on how to write dialogue with authenticity and authority. Use it in your essay for this week’s challenge or practice it in your daily posts for yeah write’s NoMo celebration (see below). Either way, be sure to read Rowan’s tips. She knows what she’s talking about.

This week’s ultimate question:

Where have all the cowboys gone?

This optional prompt, which also serves as the ultimate question for the microstory challenge opening Wednesday, is here to serve as your inspiration for your nonfiction submission. Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.

NoMo excuses at yeah write

If you can keep up the momentum, you might just win a real life prize. Think you’re up for the challenge? Check out the guidelines (including new relaxed rules just for this month). Prizes, people. There are prizes.

How to submit and fully participate in the challenge:

  1. In the sidebar of this week’s post, please grab the code beneath the challenge grid badge and paste it into the HTML view of your entry
  2. Follow the Inlinkz instructions after clicking “add your link” to upload your entry to this week’s challenge grid
  3. Your entry should appear immediately on the grid if you don’t receive an error message
  4. Please make the rounds to read all the entries in this week’s challenge
  5. Consider turning off moderated comments and CAPTCHA on your own blog

It’s a holiday week here in the U.S. so all the yeah write grids are unmoderated! All submissions meeting the basic guidelines will be moved to the voting grid.
