Stand in the place where you live.

I’m standing as I type this.

I’d like to tell you that this new healthy choice of mine is the direct result of an eager and aggressive New Year’s resolution agenda, but really it’s because my back can’t take sitting hunched in front of a computer for very long. I promised myself the last time my back went out that I’d stand (now face west) in my kitchen and work at the tall bar table we have wedged between the stove and the baking cupboard we inherited from Nana.

Since I made this “standing” rule, I’ve noticed something cool: ideas seem to come faster.* When I stand (now face north), I find I move my hips or shift my weight around a lot. Being free to move must help me get the words going because I don’t have to think as long or as hard for my next sentence to come. That and the eventual ache in my legs motivates me to finish my writing faster, which gives me more time in the day to do non-screen-related things…like choreograph dances to REM songs (are you singing it yet?). It’s win-win-win.

*I should add that I have no hard scientific data on this. It’s just the way I feel, which must have some bearing on my attitude when I write. Right?

This week all of your writing will be eligible for voting! So bring us something new, bright, and shiny. The standard rules still apply, of course: stay within the 750-word count, no commercial posts, and use proper grammar and punctuation.

Who dropped the ball?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. Tell us all about Greg from Accounting’s spectacular ball-drop. In case that’s not enough to get you going:

New inspiration for you

Introducing Prompt Up!

Prompt up is our new optional weekly writing prompt for the fiction|poetry challenge! Here’s how it works: we choose a sentence prompt from last week’s winning nonfiction post and announce it in the kick-off. It’s your job to use that prompt as the first sentence in your poem or story and then run with it. The prompt is just a springboard, though: feel free to keep it as your first sentence, move it somewhere else, change it, or yank it out completely.

Last week’s winning post was Mamarific’s This Old House Is Not Mentally Tough, her honest essay on self acceptance. This week’s Prompt Up is: It will open.

Got your own story all thought up? No problem. The ultimate question and the Prompt Up are only there if you need them.

Focus on fiction + poetry slam

Need a bit more? This is the last week for our focus on fiction genre, myth, and the poetry slam feature, the tritina, before we move on to other interesting forms. Still drawing a blank? Join the conversation in the coffeehouse. You’ll notice we moved it to a Facebook group that’s much easier to access and share!

Is this your first time here?
