Tick-tock

I haven’t been writing as much lately. Actually, I haven’t been writing at all, and it hurts my heart. The burden of untold stories weighs on me as I go about my job, composing lectures, formatting assignments, plucking from the bottomless well of essays to read and grade. Each day is a struggle to find enough minutes to even feed myself–the life of a teacher is one of starts and stops, of flurrying activities and then rest. I am almost at the resting portion. I breathe deeply, and the stories stir to life within me. Only a few more weeks until there’s time to let them out.

Writers who tell you to just make time or set the alarm early have clearly never taught a seven a.m. class. If I set the alarm any earlier, I will stop sleeping altogether. If I make time, I will probably rob it from time devoted to doing laundry and start to smell pretty quickly. Weekends are a thing of the past–every day is a work day for me. My only solution is to wait patiently for the winter break, when the tick-tock of the clock will no longer be my master.

If you have time, use it wisely, friend. Let the stories and poems fill your pages. Make time, if you can. If you can’t, I’ll be right there with you, watching the hands of the clock move around until it’s our turn again.

If you were able to make it to the grid, be sure to check out the submission guidelines. Take a peek if you haven’t already, or maybe refresh your memory if you’ve participated before. It will give you confidence when you click that submit button.

Meet our members

Yeah write is a 100% volunteer run organization, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of some amazing members. Why don’t you swing by and see who they are? While you’re there, give them a big thank you, or maybe a hug. And if you’re so inclined, consider becoming a member yourself.

Where have all the cowboys gone?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. Celluloid, song lyric, attitude or historical cowboys are all fair game.  Already have a different story thought up? No problem! Use the prompt only if you need it.

New inspiration for you

Introducing Prompt Up!

Prompt Up is our new optional weekly writing prompt for the fiction|poetry challenge! Here’s how it works: we choose a sentence prompt from last week’s winning nonfiction post and announce it in the kick-off. It’s your job to use that prompt as the first sentence in your story and then run with it. The prompt is just a springboard, though: feel free to keep it as your first sentence, move it somewhere else, change it, or yank it out completely.

This week’s winning nonfiction post was about Samantha Brinn Merel’s first realization of what it means to be a mother. This week’s Prompt Up taken from that fantastic essay is: I stood up a little straighter.

Focus on Fiction + Poetry Slam

Need a bit more? For this month’s focus on fiction, we have survived the end with dystopias. In the poetry corner, we’re attempting the lovely ghazal.

Still drawing a blank? Join the conversation in the coffeehouse. You’ll notice we moved it to a Facebook group where it’s much easier to access and share!

Is this your first time here?
