Gathering footsteps

On Sunday in the kickoff post, Christine talked about the other facet of writing. We all know the facet of writing that involves computers, a little bit of writing, a whole lot of editing and precious, precious time. But how do we keep generating ideas to write about? We need museums and conversation and music and a night sitting on a 7-11 floor playing backgammon with a friend’s cousin to keep the writing coming.  Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way, calls this replenishment of creativity “filling the well.”

My favorite way to fill the well is simple: I take a walk. A phoneless, headphoneless, walletless, partnerless, catless (even though they’re really cute on a leash) walk. I live near a large green park with sidewalks and tennis courts and three baseball diamonds, so that’s usually where I head. There are dogs walking their humans, eastern European men playing bocce ball, a young couple leaning against a tree, little kids eating ice cream from the dessert truck. Sometimes I try to invent stories about them; sometimes I just float as I walk. Either way ideas almost always arise. Works like a charm. Then I walk home, add my ideas to a running list, knowing that the best ones will eventually become stories or essays that I’ll publish.

Before you press Publish, make sure to check out the submission guidelines. Take a peek if you haven’t already, or maybe refresh your memory if you’ve participated before. It will give you confidence when you click that submit button.

Meet our members

Yeah write is a 100% volunteer run organization, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of some amazing members. Why don’t you swing by and see who they are? While you’re there, give them a big thank you, or maybe a hug. And if you’re so inclined, consider becoming a member yourself.

What did you promise them?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. Was it peanut butter cookie dough, or a smile or $1,000,000? Already have a different story thought up? No problem! Use the prompt only if you need it.

New inspiration for you

Introducing Prompt Up!

Prompt Up is our new optional weekly writing prompt for the fiction|poetry challenge! Here’s how it works: we choose a sentence prompt from last week’s winning nonfiction post and announce it in the kick-off. It’s your job to use that prompt as the first sentence in your story and then run with it. The prompt is just a springboard, though: feel free to keep it as your first sentence, move it somewhere else, change it, or yank it out completely.

Last week’s nonfiction winner was Stacie with her post The Gardener, a personal essay about the day she found out the meaning of a small garden in a public space. This week’s Prompt Up taken from that essay is: I didn’t look back.

Focus on Fiction + Poetry Slam

Need a bit more? For this month’s focus on fiction, we have survived the end with dystopias. In the poetry corner, we’re attempting the lovely ghazal.

Still drawing a blank? Join the conversation in the coffeehouse. You’ll notice we moved it to a Facebook group where it’s much easier to access and share!
