You say it’s your birthday

Sniff, we’re growing up so fast. Yeah write is celebrating its fourth birthday this week, and as usual, we have some surprise plans cooking. Some of them will be announced in the coming weeks, but for today, we have one very special announcement to make.

Here’s our birthday gift to you: we’re increasing the word count limit. The new limit is 750 words for fiction and poetry. This gives you some room to practice developing longer narrative arcs and sketch more fleshed-out characters. Remember, though: you don’t have to use all the words.

Focus on fiction

We’re always thinking of ways to keep you inspired, and as it’s National Poetry Month, we wanted to make sure we kept up with our poetry slams. For this month, we’re trying out the dróttkvætt (don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds). However, we’re also beefing up our fiction corner, too. For our first-ever series on fiction,  we’re inviting you to give historical fiction a try. Both are completely optional, but we hope to see you participate in the fun.

Need even more inspiration? Check out our optional prompt:

Who’s in charge around here?

This optional prompt is to serve as your inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. The answer may be Charles, but if you did not grow up in the US in the eighties, then you’ll probably go in a different direction. Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.

Have questions you can’t find the answer to by poking around the site? Email us or find us on Facebook and Twitter and we’ll happily help you out.

The fiction|poetry challenge is open for submissions!
