Put your fiction|poetry on the wall

Writing is one of the loneliest things a person can do. I don’t know anyone who writes because they need to be alone – they might go for a walk or read a book, but not write. On top of being lonely, it is hard work. We do it because we have to; we are driven to it. We write to be read.

In her charming essay “I’ll Put Your Poem on the Wall,” yeah writer Jenny Poore reminds us how important the act of creating is and why it should be celebrated.  She writes,

“You are the poet and the poem. You are the clean piece of paper, smooth, unmarked, waiting for the ingredients to be assembled. I will put you on the wall where … the world can see you, where we can read you and celebrate you always. I will put your poem on the wall, I will always put your poem on the wall, and I will use the stickiest tape, and I will hang it in exactly the right place, I will do all this for you, I promise.”

Celebrating the act of writing is why yeah write exists. It’s a place to put your writing on the wall. If you’re new, welcome! You will find a nurturing, creative home here. If you’ve been with us a while, please keep writing and sharing. Newbie or veteran, please read the work of your peers and comment on their blogs. That’s why we put it up on the wall (actually, we call it a grid, but close enough). Remember: you are awesome.

If you need a nudge to get your story or poem started this week, our optional prompt is:

Who turned out the light?

Use this question as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Write about starlight or the light in your closet–write about lightning, if that’s what strikes you. Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is there if you need it.

Speaking of awesome
