Welcome to the fiction and poetry challenge at yeah write

We’re still sonneting it up this week for our poetry slam, and let me tell you, sonnet writing is not easy. Some people think that poetry is a wishy-washy art form that grows purely from feelings and can look like whatever you want, but as an English instructor, I’m here to burst your bubble. Poetry is hard. The sonnet follows a strict metrical form and a firm rhyme scheme. It is an art form, and art is only part inspiration–the other part is elbow grease, not effortlessness.

Need some advice/a shoulder to cry on? Check out the coffeehouse and look for the February Poetry Slam thread. Not a sonnet lover? We still love you–we’re accepting all forms of fiction and poetry, as long as they pass muster with the yeah write guidelines.

Now, for the optional prompt:

What went wrong?

This optional prompt is to serve as your inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Whether you choose catastrophic bouts of extreme weather or a relationship snafu, make sure we know what went wrong. Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.

How yeah write works

We’ve got three competitive challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories. They are all moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid.

You can learn more about yeah write in our FAQ.
