Welcome to the fiction and poetry challenge at yeah write

I once had this teacher who insisted all his students write their papers without using any version of the verb form “to be.” No “is,” “was,” “will be” or the like. We agonized to find alternate ways of expressing ourselves. We struggled to say exactly what we meant, accessing parts of our brains we didn’t even know existed. For years, the habit stuck with me, and I managed to write an entire thesis without once using that tired old verb. Even today, I find it easy to seek out the right word for the right moment. After so much practice, I continually thank that stern teacher for imparting the gift of creative word use.

The moral of this story? Challenge yourself. After all, as our optional prompt tells us:

What do we have to lose?

This optional prompt is to serve as your inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Take the prompt in an unusual direction. Are there high stakes? Low stakes? Maybe a carton full of snakes that need disposing of? Or already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.
