[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Well, we’re gearing up for the final round of the super challenge – good luck to our round 2 winners – and you know what that means….

I’m totally procrastinating on Pinterest.

I love this little competition we’ve got, from the regular grids to the superchallenge and yes, you too, moonshine grid. But there are days I just want to click “save” on four hundred steampunk corsets instead of figuring out which of the five top words we’re going to use tonight in the final round.

While I do that, you can do something that’s a heck of a lot less work for me: check out our popular vote winners on this week’s main grids! But it’s not all about the popular vote, folks. We also have our editorial staff picks to hand out. Every week our editors comb through your submissions looking for their favorites. Picks are based on writing quality, how successful the author is in conveying information, and just plain style. If you got a staff pick this week, grab your badge from the sidebar and wear it with pride!

Once you’re done reading through the staff picks (and congratulating the winners in the comments), keep scrolling down to check out Rowan’s Roundup and see who won the popular vote on all three grids. If you earned the highest number of votes in any challenge, you are this week’s crowd favorite! If you came in first, second or third, you get “top three” honors. Grab your badge from our sidebar!

Looking for your badge? Our challenges all have the same winner, staff pick, and top three badges. It doesn’t clutter up our sidebar, and they’ll still look pretty on yours![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

strong by snapper

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]In “Strong,” Snapper at Superhero Lunchbox shows us that aging is not for the weak spirited. Through contrasting imagery – night/day, weak/strong, pain/comfort – she echoes the transition of youth to middle age, the slow movements one has to make to avoid pulling a back muscle. At the same time, the essay is about the longevity of a relationship and how, even as we age and grow weaker, sharing it with someone we love gives us that deeper strength, the kind that in earlier years allows her to “carry myself through life in a way that suited me.” Much of the action takes place horizontally, as the women rest on the ground or in bed. She paints a night scene in the desert, which easily serves as a metaphor for growing old, marked not with fear but astonishment at the stars and planets as the women look up at the sky. In the morning, a new day, they share their lament over growing weaker in body, but more important is the resolve to love in the face of our bodies betraying us:  Her partner says, “without hesitation, ‘We’ll hold each other up.’” In the end, it is tenderness that strengthens us.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”22653″ style=”vc_box_circle” title=”meg”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Rowan’s roundup: yeah write weekly writing challenge #277

nonfiction

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]I often talk about something that went wrong on the grids. This week I want to focus on what went right: transitions. From Melony’s echoing first-and-last setup to Snapper’s visual and temporal break, writers did a fantastic job this week setting up and flagging transitions from past to present and from introspection to exposition. If you’re struggling with how to move your reader from one concept to the next, here are a couple more basic techniques to look at. After you’ve skimmed the article, take a look back through the grid to see how writers used these concepts on a more macro level.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”29344″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

fiction|poetry

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This week’s theme was “try something new.” And for the most part, it worked really well for everyone. The tragedy of the popular vote method is that you don’t know how close someone’s 4th place was to their 3d. Folks were exploring new genres and techniques, new ways of interacting with the prompt, and, well, new ways of getting prompts and ideas (quick, give me three words for a tritina, someone). Remember that the best way to tell how you’re doing is to read your feedback, so do everyone else the same favor you need and go make sure you’ve commented on their post and told them what worked for you and what you struggled with.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”29345″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]That’s it for this week! Remember, we don’t always give out a pick on every grid; if we were impressed by several posts on one grid, we’ll give them all picks, and if nothing really stood out for us on another grid, we’ll hold off. If you didn’t get a pick this week, read back through the roundup to see if you can use some of this week’s tips and tricks.

If you’re lost in the middle of the grid and wondering how you can get a little more feedback on your posts, check out our membership perks!

Everybody: before you go, please take some time to leave your favorites a little love in the comments, and don’t forget, our weekend grid opens tonight at 6pm Eastern US Time![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Congratulations to the crowd favorites at yeah write #277

The thumbnails are now sorted in order of most votes to fewest. Ties in the overall number of votes are broken by number of editor votes.

Congratulations if you’re at or near the top! Writing well is hard work, and we’re honored you’ve chosen us this week to showcase your entry.

If you’re at or near the bottom, don’t be discouraged. You’re in the right community for learning and growing as a writer, and we are always available with resources for those who ask nicely.

To our readers and voters: thank you! See you next week.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
