Distraction-free writing: is there such a thing?

I close my bedroom door. I plug in my earbuds. I listen to, on loop, music so familiar, it’s like spooning the cuddliest dog in the world.

Yet, sometimes, I cannot get done what I need to get done, and that thing is to write. The fiercest competitor for my brain space is my very own thoughts. I cannot get away from them. The best I can do is to organize them into little pockets of talking bits. What I should have said to the neighbor goes over here. The phone calls I should be making go over there. Then, maybe, I can get some stuff down on paper.

But if I don’t? If I don’t get anything down? As part of my ongoing self-care, I try not to beat myself up over it. I commit to trying again the next day or the next week. Which is why it’s so exciting to get the notifications of new essays and new short stories being submitted to the yeah write challenge each week: you were able to put aside your distractions, tame your pockets of talking bits, and write. Congratulations, it was a bigger accomplishment than you’re giving yourself credit for. We’re glad you’re here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

This week’s ultimate question: How hot is it?

This optional prompt is here to serve as your inspiration for your nonfiction submission. Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.
