Greetings Earthlings!

School starts this week in my little corner of the galaxy. With one kid in pre-kindergarten and the other in first grade, this has the potential to bring either order or chaos to my life. I’m not sure which. What I do know is that we’ve got a ton of amazing things coming up here at yeah write. Here’s one that should excite all of us microstory fans!

Microstories at Long Beach Comic Con

We’re running a very special microstory contest on site at Long Beach Comic Con in just a few short weeks! Con attendees will have the chance to give us their very best 42 words answering this ultimate question: … Wait, we’re not going to give you that. It’s a flash competition; you’ll just have to wait and see. Be sure to check back here the weekend of September 12-13! We’ll be posting all entries realtime on Twitter, so make sure to follow us! We’ll also post entries on a special con grid for your reading pleasure later.

Winners – one per day – will be announced at the convention via social media and will receive a custom sketch by award-winning comic artist Steve Ellis (DC, Dark Horse, Marvel and more) based on his or her microstory. Stay tuned for an interview with Ellis’ collaborator on The Only Living Boy, David Gallaher, after the con!

Answer the ultimate question in exactly 42 words: why did all hell break loose?

This week’s question requires only two things for a good answer: chaos and the catalyst – the thing that set it off. Did Johnny start a food fight in school? Did your secret mission to save the world go awry? You want to talk about actual Hell? Go for it.

Quick reminder: please count your words with your fingers and toes. Don’t rely on your software. WordPress and Word are both notorious for giving inaccurate word counts. Also, at yeah write hyphenated words (hanky-panky) are counted as one, as are numbers written in numerals (1912).

A few other reminders:

PROOFREAD. Nothing is easier, and nothing will get you bumped from the voting grid faster than typos, spelling or punctuation mistakes, or grammatical errors. You’ve only got 42 words; mistakes stick out.

Keep in mind that your post has to make sense if your reader doesn’t know the question. Don’t use the question as your title or anywhere else in your piece. And remember, any words surrounding your microstory — explanations, references, footnotes, shout-outs, etc. — will be counted against your 42-word limit. The only exception is photo credits.

The top 42 entries will be open for voting on Thursday

Email us or head over to our pages on Facebook and Twitter with any questions.

Winners will be announced on Friday

Look for Friday’s combined winners’ post to see the crowd favorites and editors’ picks from across all of our challenge grids.

What else is happening around here?

We’ve got the nonfiction grid opening on Mondays, the speakeasy for fiction and poetry on Tuesdays, the micro challenge on Wednesdays, and the come-one, come-all moonshine grid for the weekends. We’ve also got a great hangout space over at the coffeehouse. Make sure you subscribe to our weekly e-mail blast so you don’t miss out.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
