Greetings, Earthlings!

Thanks for giving me 42 delicious little birthday treats! I enjoyed each and every one of them. Better than cupcakes, I tell you – and less caloric. And to make it even sweeter, this week we had ten newbies join the gargleblaster grid, and four hitchhikers!

Crowd favorite

This week you had seven votes apiece, and you put them to good use. The number one spot goes to Rowan at textwall for her gritty, raw piece Seemed Like a Fair Trade at the Time.

It’s all the little shit you take for granted that I miss the most, like knowin’ if there’s a spider on you before it’s practically on your junk.  They gave me a medal; I’d sure as hell rather have my fuckin’ legs.

The thing I love about this piece is the utter sincerity in the narrator’s voice. The bitterness bleeds straight through the words, and we all understand a little more about what sacrifice really means. Fabulous job, Rowan. Pick up your badge – it’s not a medal, but we hope you wear it with pride.

Editor’s pick

If Rowan’s post is hard and gritty, this week’s editor’s pick is completely the opposite, though both speak of loss. Jennifer Knoblock’s poem The Sixth Age is wistful and nostalgic. You can almost feel time sliding against your skin.

Dust motes falling in silence Sun slanting through afternoon Clock hands unmoving   Neighbors driving straight into their garages Ice cream truck passing by, street echoing empty where children once played   Piano stool vacant Framed photos fading Mirrors, unwanted, turned to the wall

Beautiful poem, Jennifer. I’m pleased to award it the editor’s pick badge! Go grab it from the sidebar.

Top row seven*

Seven votes, and seven winners in the top row. You should all be proud of yourselves – only a handful of votes separated first place from seventh. Congratulations to Rowan plus James for Anatomy, Karen for Goosebumps, Angie for Is Something Crawling on Me?, Ryan for Survivor, Forty and Fantastique for Gargleblaster 161 – Is Something Crawling on Me?, and Jen for Salvation. Don’t forget to add the badge to your post.

The gargleblaster grid is now sorted in order of votes from most to fewest. It’s always a tight race and a wonderful opportunity to learn from your fellow grid-mates. * I realize that your browser may not display the grid in neat rows of seven, but mine does. Therefore, the Top Row 7.

Hitchhiker’s prize!

And because it’s my birthday, and because this one made me smile, I’m awarding a hitchhiker’s prize this week! It goes to Claudette, a newbie who missed the grid, but linked to her poem Gaia and Luna in the comments. Her poem is a little tongue-in-cheek and a lot social commentary.

Gaia, earthbound beauty, bathed all in light speaks softly to Luna, her pale sister of night “I’ve a horrible feeling all over my skin I’ve just heard of Humanity, can you look and see, if something hideous is crawling on me?”

Congrats, Claudette, and welcome to yeah write! There’s a snazzy badge for you over there to the left.

There’s more to life than gargleblasters

Hard as it is to believe, there are other challenges out there at yeah write! Go ahead — take a few minutes to check out this week’s challenge grid (for personal essays and traditional blog anecdotes) and the speakeasy (for fiction). Read, comment, get to know the community. And if the mood strikes you, submit your own post: the challenge grid and speakeasy are open until 10:00 PM Eastern on Wednesday. We know you won’t all make the grid every week, but don’t panic! The moonshine grid opens on Friday and we’d love to see you there.
