The art of persuasion

We’ve been studying the art of persuasion in one of my classes. Persuasion involves using rhetoric in a skilled manner; word choice, style, and structure all contribute to an argument’s overall effect. But Natalie, I hear you protest, we’re not arguing anything here! This is fiction! And poetry! What do poems and stories have to do with argument? Ah, but everything is an argument when you consider it, particularly fiction.

In fiction, you must persuade the audience to believe in your plot. Your characters must persuade the audience that their lives, thoughts, and motivation matters. Every word creates mood and characterization. Every word matters–even more so in poetry.

Before creating your own persuasive story, make sure to review the submission guidelines before you add your post to the challenge. If you’ve found some other yeah write writers you dig, why not ask them to be your writing partner? Everyone needs another set of eyes to point out the typos, content errors, and ungainly phraseologies in our posts.

Where did the time go?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. Did it vanish or slip away? If you already have an idea, no problem–the prompt is only there if you need it.

New inspiration for you

Prompt up!

Prompt up is our optional weekly writing prompt for the fiction|poetry challenge! Here’s how it works: we choose a sentence prompt from last week’s winning nonfiction post and announce it in the kickoff. The prompt is just a springboard, though: feel free to use it as your first sentence, move it, change it, or float down it to other territories.

Cyn had us crying and laughing with her tribute to a friend that passed away, Seeking Lalochezia. This week’s Prompt Up is: I wanted to write her a poem.

March poetry slam: haiku

Haiku is not just about counting syllables, and it’s much, much more than 5-7-5. Rowan will teach you to pack this tiny poem with enough imagery and emotion to sustain your soul for days.

Is this your first time here?

Check out Sunday’s post which kicked off the week here at yeah write. If you don’t think you can remember to check back every Sunday, sign up for our email blasts. We send them directly to your inbox. No fuss!
