What to say

I am sick today. My body aches and I’m running a fever. All I want to do is curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and watch a few hours of mindless TV. In fact, I am struggling to find a coherent way to string together words for this post. The stack of essays that need grading is mocking me from the coffee table, the red pen urging me to power through the misery and get it over with, already. Whatever am I going to say to you writers today?

See, if all else fails, write your truth. You can incorporate your truth into a fictional tale, but when a plot reaches a standstill or a character turns its back on you, borrow from your own life, as I just did. Rowan also has compiled some pretty solid ideas for fictional and poetical inspiration over the last year in the writing help reference guide, so you can peruse that, too. The focus on fiction feature may be ending, but the support will remain, and Rowan will continue writing her poetry slam and nonfiction features.

One last reminder: before you press “Post,” be sure to check out the submission guidelines. Take a peek if you haven’t already, or maybe refresh your memory if you’ve participated before. It will give you confidence when you click that submit button.

Meet our members

Yeah write is a 100% volunteer run organization, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of some amazing members. Why don’t you swing by and see who they are? While you’re there, give them a big thank you, or maybe a hug. And if you’re so inclined, consider becoming a member yourself.

What are you singing?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. If it’s the new Adele song, we understand, but try to be more original than that. In case that’s not enough:

New inspiration for you

Introducing Prompt Up!

Prompt up is our new optional weekly writing prompt for the fiction|poetry challenge! Here’s how it works: we choose a sentence prompt from last week’s winning nonfiction post and announce it in the kick-off. It’s your job to use that prompt as the first sentence in your poem or story and then run with it. The prompt is just a springboard, though: feel free to keep it as your first sentence, move it somewhere else, change it, or yank it out completely.

This week’s nonfiction winner was Meg’s sobering post on climate change, Time and Temperature. The prompt is: I want to grab the man by his collar and tell him to snap out of it.

Got your own story all thought up? No problem. The ultimate question and the prompt up are only there if you need them.

Focus on fiction + poetry slam

Need a bit more? Our finale focus on fiction genre is myth. And we’re re-slamming the tritina. Why? Because we lurve them.

Still drawing a blank? Join the conversation in the coffeehouse. You’ll notice we moved it to a Facebook group where it’s much easier to access and share!
