The November contest is here.  Bring us your fiction and poetry.

Part of my job as an English instructor is to read, which for me is like having a license to steal. This semester, I am rereading One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez for class, and this novel continually surprises me with its inventiveness. The supernatural intertwines with the ordinary in blended harmony. The story flows along like clear water over rocks. It takes you seamlessly back and forth through a mythical history as if time travel were possible. It is also beautiful–oh so beautiful. Writing that makes readers believe that magic is not only viable, but inevitable, is a high mark to aim for as writers, but where else should we aim?

Wherever you choose to aim, this week you should be asking yourself this week’s optional prompt:

What’s in it for me?

This optional prompt is to serve as your inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Think of where the prompt might lead you, then take opposite direction. A selfish protagonist? Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.

Fall writing contest is on

Interested in winning cash? How about chocolate, and maybe a book to read too? Then jump on into our November writing contest. Just be sure to register for the contest by filling out this entry form. The three best in the competition will win prizes, and those who refer the winners will receive matching prizes, so spread the word! Make sure your entry is the best on the grid before you submit. General rules of each genre apply, and our submissions editor will make sure they pass muster before advancing to the voting. Have more questions? Visit our contest page for all the info.
