Prime time

In math, 233 is a prime number. A Fibonacci prime, in fact, which is a pretty special thing: only 49 known Fibonacci primes have been proven so far. What’s that got to do with us?

In spite of not being a math person, I’m a fan of prime numbers. Each one is complete unto itself, indivisible by definition. When you are submitting to any yeah write challenge, try to think of your writing the same way.  Each submission should tell a single story; provide a single message – what we call the “so what.” If you can separate your piece into multiple thought-lines, you might not be telling a single story. See if you can tease them apart. You might just end up with two prime essays or stories instead of one composite one.

Who’s on fourth?

Tomorrow is the fourth Monday of the month, which means it’s time for our next interview post! This month we are talking with the creator of our favorite space otter, Michael of Hypothetically Writing. You don’t want to miss this!

Long Beach Comic Con recap – stay tuned!

We can’t wait to introduce you to all the amazing writers who tried out our on-site microstory contest. We’ll give you all the details, complete with pictures and even video, a little later this week! In the meantime, hop on over to the coffeehouse and welcome the new folks.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

New to yeah write?

Welcome to the best place on the ‘net for writers who blog and bloggers who write. We are thrilled to have you join us. Whether you are ready to jump in with both feet or you would rather just dip in a toe for now, we hope you stay around. There is room here for everyone: writers, readers, lurkers, and fans.

We’ve got three competitive challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories — all of which are moderated. Take a moment to review our submission guidelines and then check out our weekly writing challenges. Got a question? E-mail us, tweet us, ping us on Facebook, or visit our online community, the yeah write coffeehouse. You can learn more about yeah write in our FAQ.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Bring us your personal essays and creative nonfiction!

The nonfiction challenge grid opens on Monday at midnight EDT. This is the best place on the ‘net to showcase your best writing. Make us laugh, make us cry, make us think, and above all: make us care.

Is fiction more your thing?

The fiction|poetry grid opens on Tuesday. Grab a mic and join our monthly poetry slam, or check out our focus on fiction! The coffeehouse is the place to go to keep up on these special events.

Focus on fiction: this month we’re studying the monomyth, or hero’s journey.

Poetry slam: give a tanka a try – it’s like a haiku on steroids.

This week’s ultimate question: what did it taste like?

Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the microstory challenge, or use it to inspire your submission to the other competitive grids. The microstory challenge opens on Wednesday.

Tips for your microstories

This week’s question requires two elements for a good answer: a thing that you have literally or figuratively tasted, and description of or metaphor for the “flavor.” Remember the “thing” doesn’t have to be tangible. Revenge, an apple, a kiss, memories – all of these things have a flavor.

Rules: do not include the question in your title or your answer. Do not include extra words – no footnotes, no explanations, no shout-outs. Do not rely on your word processor or blog to give you an accurate word count. COUNT YOUR WORDS WITH YOUR EYES. Posts that do not meet these standards will not be moved to the voting grid. See the submission guidelines for more details.

Questions? Want to talk it through? Grab a latte at the coffeehouse and chat with your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Winners’ round-up

In case you missed them, you can find last week’s yeah write staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.

Weekend writing showcase

The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Just leave your commercial or sponsored posts at home. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
