How time flies

A couple of weeks ago Wordpress sent me a little notification “Happy Anniversary with Wordpress!” At first I was confused – I’ve had my blog for a couple of years now, after all. Maybe WordPress got it wrong? Then I realized it meant one year at yeah write.

A year ago, founding editor Erica M brought me on board to launch a little thing we called the gargleblaster. We hit the ground running and immediately found ourselves swimming in gargleblasters – tiny 42-word microstories that answered that week’s ultimate question. Have you tried a gargleblaster yet, by the way? If not, this might be the week to give it a whirl. Scroll down for details.

A year. A whole year. It’s been a great one. Thanks, my loyal earthlings, for making my job so much fun![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Bring us your personal essays and creative nonfiction!

The nonfiction challenge grid opens on Monday at midnight EDT. This is the best place on the ‘net to showcase your best writing. Make us laugh, make us cry, make us think, and above all: make us care.

Is fiction more your thing?

The fiction|poetry grid opens on Tuesday. For you poets, we’re done with cinquains and will be moving on to a new poetry form in the April poetry slam. Plus we’ve got a new little something-something for our flash fictioneers. Keep an eye on the coffeehouse for a special announcement![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

This week’s ultimate question: …

We’re going back to the roots of the gargleblaster microstory challenge this week! What does this mean? It means the ultimate question will be announced in the microstory kickoff post at 12:00 AM EDT on Wednesday. That gives you 22 fast, furious hours in which to write your micro before the grid closes at 10:00 PM. And the grid will be capped at 42 entries.

Same rules apply: 42 words exactly. Please do not include extra words – no shout-outs, no explanations, no notes. (The only exception is image credits.) Don’t use the question in your answer or as your title. Do answer the question.

Voting will open as usual at 11:00 PM. And hey, if we get a good turnout, we may just reward you with extra votes.

Oh, and did I forget to mention? The microstory grid will be unmoderated this week![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Winners’ round-up

Looking for inspiration? Wondering what makes for a winning post at yeah write? Well, check out last week’s yeah write staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.

The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

How yeah write works

We’ve got three competitive challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories. They are all moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid.

You can learn more about yeah write in our FAQ.

More than just a weekly writing challenge

Sure, the competitive grids are our bread and butter, but there’s more on the menu. We’re building a community of writers who are continually striving to get better at their craft. The challenge grids are one way to do this. We’ve also got the moonshine weekend writing showcase, which is a great place to let loose and try something new, plus the yeah write coffeehouse — the hippest place on the ‘net to find a writing partner, talk about writing or just hang out with other yeah writers. Head barista Nate serves up a couple shots of espresso every week, specially formulated to get your creative juices flowing. Grab a chair and start chatting up your neighbors!
