Take a break!

It’s coming up on Thanksgiving here in the US. This means we’re taking a break from the contest and letting you run loose on unmoderated grids this week! The rules still apply: word count restrictions, attention to the ultimate question, no commercial or sponsored posts, etc.  This will let our writers and editors spend their time cleaning house, cooking, hosting friends and family for days on end, doing dishes and trying not to strangle our children or our in-laws. Wait, why do we do this again? Oh, right. The giving thanks part.

I’m going to throw in a little personal note here, because I’m sentimental like that. Thanks, to all of you who come back week after week to play in our playground. To those of you who stop in now and then to try out the slide or the swings. To those of you who share your mittens with other kids and who don’t take your toys and go home just because the game didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to. And, most especially, to all the amazing editors and contributors who keep this playground open. I came here hoping to just kick a ball around a little and ended up finding a whole passel of friends. So. For that I am grateful. Thank you.

About that contest

The final week of the contest will kick off on November 29. No need to fill out an entry form this week! Meanwhile, we’re keeping a running list of the top entries every week. Want to know who’s in the running for prizes so far? Here’s a sneak peek at the current contenders.

What’s this about a vote?

Although the winning contest entries will be determined by our editorial staff panel, you can still earn bragging rights by winning the popular vote which takes place on Thursdays. Remember: yeah write is not a popularity contest, so no self-voting, no targeted voting and no campaigning for your own entry.

Did we say prizes?

We’ve got everything from cash to books to chocolate on the line for the winners. New to yeah write? Tell us who referred you and get them to sign up for our email blast. If you win, your referrer will win too! Many many thanks to our contest prize donors: anonymous friends, Victoria Barrett of Engine Books, Myfanwy Collins and Lindt Chocolate.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

This week’s ultimate question: why are your boots off?

Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the gargleblaster micro challenge, or use it to inspire your submission to the other competitive grids. The nonfiction challenge opens on Monday, the speakeasy fiction|poetry challenge opens on Tuesday and the gargleblaster micro challenge opens on Wednesday.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Winners’ round-up

In case you missed them, you can find the yeah write #188 staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.

The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

More than just a weekly writing challenge

Sure, the competitive grids are our bread and butter, but there’s more on the menu. We’re building a community of writers who are continually striving to get better at their craft. The challenge grids are one way to do this. We’ve also got the moonshine weekend writing showcase, which is a great place to let loose and try something new, plus the yeah write coffeehouse — the hippest place on the ‘net to find a writing partner, talk about writing or just hang out with other yeah writers. Head barista Nate serves up a couple shots of espresso every week, specially formulated to get your creative juices flowing. Grab a chair and start chatting up your neighbors![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

How yeah write works (normally)

We’ve got three competitive challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories. They are all moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid. This week, however, you’re all getting a pass through moderation, assuming you obey our basic guidelines, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still bring your best work to us.

You’ll find the schedule, submissions guidelines, etc. in our FAQ.
