Welcome home!

Have you met our middle sister? She’s the one daydreaming in the corner over there, all wrapped up in could’ve-beens and might-bes. That’s right – the speakeasy has come home to yeah write!

Many of you have been grid-hopping for ages from the nonfiction challenge to the speakeasy to the gargleblaster. We’re making it easier on you by hosting everything all in one place. If you’re feeling adventurous, go ahead and give us a story. You can use the ultimate question to inspire you, or you can just jump right in with whatever you’d like to say. Don’t forget to sign up for the yeah write e-mail blast and follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

nate flipfaceMeet the barista

The coffeehouse is under new management with new yeah write contributing writer Nate James running the show. Every week, he’ll be serving up a free shot of espresso to help energize your writing. He’ll examine the entries that inspired him across the grids, discuss what he thinks worked well in each, and set you up with a writing exercise or discussion topic to help keep you moving. Swing by and say hello!

Fall writing contest coming soon!

We’ve pushing the start of our writing contest to November 2.  Each week, yeah write will announce the ultimate question for the gargleblaster grid which can also be used as an optional prompt for the nonfiction and fiction|poetry grids. Writers will submit their work to the grids and winners will be selected by yeah writer editors. The winner of the contest can win $200 cash. If you invite a friend to the challenge and your friend wins? You each get $200 cash: your friend for winning and you for referring the winner. Not to mention, we’ve got a boatload of other prizes. You must subscribe to the yeah write e-mail blast to be eligible.

This week’s ultimate question: is this your first time?

Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the gargleblaster micro challenge, or use it to inspire your submission to the nonfiction and/or fiction|poetry challenge grids: is this your first time?

Winners round-up

In case you missed them, you can find the yeah write #182 editors’ picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you in Friday’s winners post. Go leave the winners some love in the comments! And next week, look for your speakeasy fiction|poetry winners there too!

The weekend isn’t over: the moonshine weekend writing showcase is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. Go add yours, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.

Submission guidelines

The yeah write challenge grids—nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories—are moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid. Though the focus of each challenge grid is different, there are a couple of things that we are looking for across the board: compelling stories with a strong “so what” that are free from grammatical errors and that demonstrate exceptional attention to structure and language. Posts must be written specifically for the challenge, and may not be dated earlier than today. Yeah write does not accept commercial or sponsored posts.

Challenge schedule

Beginning this week, all three grids will close for submissions at 10 p.m. eastern on Wednesday. Voting will then be open for a full 24 hours, closing at 9:59 p.m. eastern on Thursday.
