It’s the weekend, so the moonshine grid is open

This intro is a little sober, as the literary world lost one of its most beloved giants yesterday and yeah write must pay its respects. Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez passed away at the age of 87. His novels were the portal into the magical realism genre for me, when I discovered his work as a fresh-faced undergrad. I wrote term papers on him, and after my school days ended I continued to read the rest of his work. It wasn’t just brilliant material for collegiate discourse, but highly entertaining and vastly readable. If you haven’t read any of his work, I recommend starting with one of what I think of as his gateway books, either One Hundred Years of Solitude or Love in the Time of Cholera. You won’t be sorry you discovered the beautiful world of García Márquez.

Human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but […] life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.

– Love in the Time of Cholera, 65

Farewell, favorite author of ours. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Them’s the rules

Every place has rules, but mostly at the moonshine grid we just have fun. This is the place where we can read any type of blog post, in any format, with any word count. Sure, you can link up that post from last year about the time your dog got skunked in the backyard. That ordered list of your favorite Wes Anderson movies, or a poem dedicated to García Márquez – really, anything you want can go here. Just one caveat: no sponsored or commercial posts. We like it straight up here.

Does someone have a birthday in the house?

Why, yes, we do! Yeah write turned three last week, and we celebrated in true yeah write form – we had a sign-up sheet to give YOU prizes, because YOU are what keep this community alive and thriving. We’ve drawn a winner, and we’ll be announcing it in Sunday’s kickoff post. Just so you don’t miss it, sign up here for our email subscription.

Family-free month approaches…

Get ready for family-free month at yeah write. Starting with #158’s weekly writing challenge, families will be off limits as blogging subjects. No family posts whatsoever. Not your third-cousin’s nephew’s birthday party, your estranged evil twin brother, your mom’s cataract surgery, or even passing mention of a relative, blood or otherwise. The idea here is not that we don’t care about your families – of course we do! We love families – some of us even have them ourselves. But families are a ready, available subject and we want you to grow as writers. We tried this idea two years ago, and it was a complete success. If you need ideas, you can browse the archives here, ignoring and forgiving all the old formatting.

This is the badge you are looking for.

Over in the right sidebar is a list of yeah write badges containing the codes you need to satisfy the backlink requirement (also called a permalink) of the Inlinkz app. The badge for the moonshine looks like this:

moonshine

Under the badge is a few lines of code. Copy that exactly then paste it into the “text” or HTML view of your post editor. If you don’t copy it exactly, you will get an error message from the Inlinkz app. If you get confused or your browser is uncooperative, visit the Inlinkz step-by-step instructions here. If all else fails, contact Inlinkz customer support.
