Welcome to Who’s on Fourth where one member of the yeah write community will interview another yeah writer, and the interview will publish the fourth week of each month. Seventh in the series features Arden R of Arden Ruth Writes interviewing Sam of This Heart of Mine.

yeah write on yeah write: Arden interviews Sam

Two years ago, during the yeah write 2012 summer series, Sam happened upon a link. Curiosity piqued, she clicked on that link and stumbled upon the one and only yeah write. A little nervous at first, she lurked in the background for a couple of weeks before she finally got up the nerve to submit a post to the challenge grid.

My very first piece for the grid was a blog post about shoes I desperately needed to have when I was in middle school. The feedback and reinforcement I got was absolutely amazing, and after that, I was hooked.

First BookSam can’t remember a time when she didn’t write. Recently, she stumbled upon a book she wrote when she was around 6 or 7 years old. She assumed it was part of a school project but can’t quite recall. When Sam started her blog, This Heart of Mine, three years ago, she considered that the time she began ‘seriously’ writing.

I started it on a whim one gloomy Friday afternoon when I didn’t have anything else to do, and it’s kind of taken on a glorious life of its own.

When Sam first found yeah write, she thought fiction would be her wheelhouse but it turns out that non-fiction is her main squeeze for This Heart of Mine. You can usually find Sam at the challenge grid but she’s been known to make an appearance or two at the speakeasy and gargleblaster.

As always, I asked Sam what advice she would give to our yeah write virgins or those who may be lurking as Sam once did:

I would take a page out of Nike’s book and say “Just Do It.” Write the very best piece you know how to write, and just post it. After 2 years of challenge grids I can tell you that yeah write is a place that can hugely improve your writing, if you follow the process and the guidelines. Also, the people you meet and the friendships you make are real and true. So don’t be scared. Post the piece. Just do it.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

FamilyWhen she’s not writing, you can find Sam nose-deep in a romance novel. This love affair started at the age of 16. She even has a series of romance novels in her head that she has been plotting and planning for a few years. She has high aspirations of being the next Nora Roberts; to write books that make people happy and always have happy endings.

Because according to Sam, “Who doesn’t love a happy ending?”

I, for one, look forward to reading them. While I love hearing all about Sam’s adventures in writing, it’s time to dig a little deeper…

Sam’s interview continues. Click here for page two…
