Apeshit

Say writing an amazing essay, story, or poem is like busting open a pinata.

There are the obvious similes: starting out blindfolded (where’s the dude’s blindfold?), knowing about where the target is, batting the air until contact is made, swinging wide to crack it open, and then hearing all the rewards pour out.

It’s feels so good. But you know what else?

Have you ever cracked open a pinata by yourself? No, because that would be crazy. Pinata openers need people like the kids in this picture cheering you on, saying Hellz yeah you got this, or maybe muttering positive things while they eye the cake on the other end of the picnic table. You need writing friends, or kind inner voices, or a random cheerleading squad to pump their fists in the air for you. Or maybe they’re just reacting to the colorful donkey and the inherent promise of sugar. Same difference.

Either way, you’ll feel their voices in your spine. You’ll change into a leather vest for some reason, tear off that stinking blindfold (oh, maybe that’s where the blindfold went), and go apeshit on that pinata like it was the only thing standing between you and a million dollars bound together with happiness and world peace…

Because everyone knows you can do it. You’ve done it before.

PS. I’m totes the girl in the blue skirt.

If you decide to turn up the beast this week, make sure to review the submission guidelines before you hit Post. If you’ve found some other yeah write writers you dig, why not ask them to be your writing partner? Everyone needs another set of eyes to point out the typos, content errors, and ungainly phraseologies in our posts.

Who cares?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. Whatevs, you know? If you already have an idea, no problem—the prompt is only there if you need it.

New inspiration for you

Prompt up!

Prompt up is our optional weekly writing prompt for the fiction|poetry challenge! Here’s how it works: we choose a sentence prompt from last week’s winning nonfiction post and announce it in the kickoff. The prompt is just a springboard, though: feel free to use it as your first sentence, move it, change it, or float down it to other territories.

Lisa juggled motherhood, alone time, tag-teaming dinner, and a pretty relatable confession in her post Writing While Mothering. This week’s Prompt Up is: There’s this kid who lives next door.

April poetry slam: the bop

Not all poetry forms were invented hundreds of years ago. This month, we’re taking a look at something new. Created by contemporary poet Afaa M. Weaver, the bop is a cross between a sonnet, a song and an essay, and we think you’re going to love it.

Is this your first time here?
