Unfiltered

I just came back from a sun-baked week on the beach. Every year a few of my college friends and I rent out cottages in a little clapboard “resort.” During our stay, two tribes form: the kids’ caravan from merry-go-round to pier to campfire and the adults’ caravan from wine box to pinochle game to sunset cruise. It’s the relaxing and green oasis in my otherwise concrete sidewalk life.

Except this year there was a small snafu. My cabin was double-booked and the nearby hotels were full to brimming. I was given the too-short couch to sleep on.

That first morning I found myself bleary eyed standing in my underwear in our cabin’s tiny kitchen. Apparently my frantic search for coffee filters woke up my friend’s nine-year-old daughter. I had a split second to sprint across the cabin and fling myself under my sheets before she came out of her room and saw me in all of my tighty-whiteyness. I made it. Unfortunately my mad dash caused all of the coffee filters I’d found to fall into a soaking pot that had once held chicken tikka masala. Ugh.

Why is there no coffee?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. Proceed with caution, though: this former employee of frou-frou coffee shops can tell you that coffee drinkers are volatile before their first cup. I’ve become grumpy just typing out the question. Already have a different story thought up? No problem! Use the prompt only if you need it.

We’ve gone unmoderated for the summer months. That doesn’t make it a free-for-all; posts still need to meet the minimum guidelines listed below, but it does give you some more room to get creative.

Do you take cream and sugar?

We’re starting a new August focus on fiction and poetry slam, both inspired by this astronomical event. For this month’s focus on fiction, we’ll be turning people into dogs (or any other animal) with anthropomorphism. Where poetry’s concerned, we’ll be highlighting doggerel, a lazy form that doesn’t set too high of a bar for these sticky August days.

Still drawing a blank? You can also find writing exercises in the coffeehouse to get things started.

Is this your first time here?
