Free to be you and me

Fiction is the only form where I feel free to truly express what I’m trying to say. There’s no fear of hurting anyone’s feelings, no self-consciousness holding me back, no memory confusing times and exact chronology of events. My imagination can be my guide, and I can artfully arrange narrative arc and dialogue to suit my purposes.

That’s not to say it doesn’t take effort or skill to pull this off in a way that constitutes a good story, but my inner censor doesn’t yawp at me quite so loudly when I am transcribing strictly from imagination, as opposed to from my admittedly unreliable memory.

The lesson in this? Dive on in. After all, this week we’ll be finding out the answer to the optional prompt:

How deep is the pool?

The water is warm and welcoming at yeah write, where we’ve gone unmoderated for the summer months. That doesn’t make it a free-for-all, as posts still need to meet the minimum guidelines listed below, but it does give you some more room to get creative.

This optional prompt can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Is it deep enough for a cannonball, or just to dip your toes in? Is the water a metaphor, or a real live location for a pool party? Already have a different story thought up? No problem! Use the prompt only if you need it.

High dive and kiddy pool

For those looking for a challenge, we’ve got many options to choose from. Here’s a list of all of the poetry slams and focus on fiction features so far. Feel free to revisit a fiction genre or poetry form you enjoyed, or catch up on something you missed the first time around. You can also find writing exercises in the coffeehouse.

Is this your first time here?

Check out Sunday’s post which kicked off the week here at yeah write. If you don’t think you can remember to check back every Sunday, sign up for our email blasts. We send them directly to your inbox. No fuss!
