Thankfully, they weren’t wearing bikinis

Last week I went to the dog beach with a friend. It’s been a while since I’ve been around such unbridled joy. Pups of all shapes and sizes were kicking up sand and playing an endless game of tag. Their pink tongues hung out of their mouths as they chased each other up and down the dunes. It reminded me that 20 years have passed since I’ve had a dog of my own.

Don’t get me wrong; I love my cats. I like all pets, actually. I just like how trusting dogs are and how they show their personalities all the time, not just to their owners. Unfortunately, they require more space than my second-floor walk-up can accommodate. One day though a dog will come barking into my life. [ed’s note: you really need a greyhound.]

In case you haven’t guessed what this week’s optional prompt is:

Why didn’t the dog bark?

Moderation is lax around here for the dog days of summer, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give us your best stuff! If you’re not sure whether your entry needs more work, consider keeping it another week to ask a friend for feedback, and then revise, revise, revise.

This optional prompt can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Did Rover get into the peanut butter? Or did Daisy escape her leash? Tell us about it. Already have a different story thought up? No problem! Use the prompt only if you need it.

Want to swing higher?

For those looking for a challenge, we’ve got many options to choose from. Here’s a list of all of the poetry slams and focus on fiction features so far. Feel free to revisit a fiction genre or poetry form you enjoyed, or catch up on something you missed the first time around. You can also find writing exercises in the coffeehouse.

Is this your first time here?
