Welcome to the fiction and poetry challenge at yeah write

Among the hundreds of books I inherited after my sister died was a well-worn paperback of Lorrie Moore’s first novel, Anagrams, published in 1986. I cracked it open and read it this summer, laughing aloud at Moore’s still timely, hilarious passages. An experimental work, which Moore described in a Paris Review interview as a novella with four orbiting satellite stories, the book opened my eyes to fiction’s possibilities, telling multiple versions of the protagonist’s story, shifting POVs, and drawing jagged plotlines. Moore’s writing skill compelled me to suspend my disbelief. I would have taken a ride with her anywhere.

All of this is to say: bring us your best writing and we’ll follow you anywhere. If you need a nudge to get your story or poem started this week, our optional prompt is:

When did our elephants leave?

This optional prompt is to serve as your inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Real or imagined elephants are welcome in this room. Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.
