Greek goddess or pain in the neck?

In the moldy old classroom with high windows and a table that accommodated only the twelve young wanna-be-writers chosen for the fiction workshop, everyone showed up and tried so hard we were exhausted afterwards; we had to stuff ourselves with doughnuts and rum.  One day a seat remained empty, the seat of the boy whose story was due that day.  Our famous professor, his face and bald head given definition by huge black eyeglasses, lifted his chin just slightly toward the emptiness and said, “Mr. Woodruff is having trouble with his muse.” I’ve been afraid, ever since, of trouble with my muse.

You have one; who is she?  Is she chocolate, running, or music?  I’m willing to bet that for some of us, she is yeah write.  Some of us feel a little more inspired, sit up straighter and feel more terror while hitting the “publish” button when there’s a yeah write badge attached to the post.  But whether yeah write is your Greek goddess of inspiration or a pain in your neck with word limits and nonstop reminders about needing a so what, we’re very glad you’re here.  Thanks for showing up.

Our weekly friendly competition and our weekend relaxation

The challenge grid is where we want to see your personal essays and traditional blog anecdotes. Choose moments and stories that will show off your writer’s voice, and come back to vote for your favorites on Thursday.  Make sure you have a so what, a central conflict, and keep your submission under 600 words.  If the challenge grid hits thirty submissions, the editors will add the best posts to an invitational grid and award a jury prize to the best of the best. The speakeasy is on summer vacation so no distinct grid for fiction or poetry right now but. . .in the mood for anything goes? On Friday, the moonshine grid has just what you need.

Is this your first time here? Welcome!

Welcome, virgins! Please read our beautiful new “how yeah write works” page and you’ll soon be cranking out yeah write posts like a veteran. The word count for a challenge grid post is 500 words and we’ll forgive an extra 100 if you must. If you need help navigating our site and our quirky submission guidelines, please email us with any questions.
