Welcome back to moderated submissions and spreadsheet voting

Only half of the submitted entries were published to the grid this week, giving us fewer than 20 anecdotes or essays to score. So instead of handing out the usual number of three editor picks and one jury prize, we’re awarding simply the jury prize with the winner’s blurb written by yeah write contributing editor Cindy R.

My Internist Said a Four-Letter Word: Lump

Christie Tate at Outlaw Mama

A recent study found that story lights up sections of our brains for all the senses, whereas a lecture lights up only one—for language. When we read a well-told story, imagery bubbles up as we create and play a little movie in our head. Couple that with a huge so-what and you have a blog post to remember.

The first line of Christie from Outlaw Mama’s post My Internist Said a Four-Letter Word: Lump was perfect: “Nice socks,” was the first thing she said after she introduced herself, and I loved her instantly. We were already imagining the socks and wondering who was complimenting Christie. This led into a perfect first paragraph that told us all we needed to know about the setting – this was a female appointment at the doctor – and I was hooked on her post, knowing from the title that it was likely to end in uncertainty or worse.

The internet is a sea of confessional blog posts about difficult moments and life experiences. What sets this post apart is story: a realistic internal narrative, clever turns of phrase, and true emotion mixed with enough gallows humor to keep it from becoming manipulative. Our hearts go out to Christie during this period of limbo, waiting for results.

Win-Win

The thumbnails are now sorted in the grid from most editor points awarded to the least. The top row three can grab their badge from the sidebar. Congrats!

In the case of a tie, the thumbnails are additionally sorted by page views. Do not be discouraged if your blog has landed near the bottom of the grid; just getting on the grid is an accomplishment these days. The fun lies in getting better exposure for your blog and in the spirit of competition as incentive to improve your writing and blogging skills. It’s a win-win for everybody involved.

Thanks again, everybody, for linking up, for reading, for accepting the weekly challenge. And for making yeah write the most welcoming spot on the Interwebs for writers who blog and bloggers who write.

Yeah write #87 opens Tuesday. Bring your best stuff. Until then, please stop by Flood’s speakeasy for even more posts to read and enjoy.
